1976 Chevrolet Nova
April 19, 1997: Yes, my wonderful Nova is clinging to life—barely.

I bought it July '96 for $700 with 58K original miles. In August the steering went and I nearly wrecked it. The repairs on the steering came up to $550.

In December I spun on ice and off pops the rear bumper. I got a free replacement, but I didn't put it on until March '97.

In April, I overheated, lost all my coolant and some of my oil. I replaced it all and it seems to be OK. Nevertheless, the SuperNova (as my friends have named it) may soon be dead.

It's got a 250 straight-6 cyl. engine with bad lifters, a transmission fluid/antifreeze mix in the transmission, (When my dad changed some antifreeze he dumped it into an old one gallon container that used to have trans fluid in it. I was in a hurry and filled my transmission with the A/F. Ooops.), power steering, non-power brakes, and an automatic trans.

List of problems: (I do love my nova, but the thing's been abused)

Power Steering fluid in the brake fluid (done by previous owner.]

  • -Required a new master cylinder.
All rubber components in steering system rotted
  • New rubber.
    Springs are shot.
  • Haven't done anything about that yet. I scrape bottom all the time.
Broken window. (a friend slammed his door while the window was down)
  • He bought me a new window. (actually it came from a '75 nova)
Rear bumper lost in a snowstorm (spun on ice and ripped off)
  • replaced last month after I stole one from my cousin :)
A/F is trans fluid (see above)
  • drained and replaced.
    Plaid Seats
  • no money left to fix :)

The car nearly cost me my prom date. Her best friend told her mom that I lost my bumper because I'm a bad driver. Her parents wouldn't let us go unless I rented a limo.
